Day 3: The Northern Coast

Today, Tuesday May 17, was an optional day tour...7 out of the 13 of us went up to the very northern coast of Israel to view some interesting places...not too many biblical connections, but some interesting historic places.

The first place we stopped was in Akko, which is home to the Acre Citadel. It was built by the Crusaders, but of course, over taken and run by the Turks later...it also became a British prison in the 20th Century and was the site of a interesting prison break in 1947...if you are interested, you can read more about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acre,_Israel

We then explored the restoration of the citadel that had underground tunnels and unearthed places that only recently were found...really cool!

We then had a tour of a Turkish bath house in the same area...we got to wear head phone and walk around as they played a pretty cheesy audio presentation about how the men of the era would come and "chill" in the sauna...still very interesting...

Of course, every stop forces you to go through a gift shop at the end. This one led us through an amazing store where the people who own it make silver and copper wear...unbelievable works...also very expensive! Cheryl Zales got this amazing necklace which can be worn as an interesting geometrical shape, but then be transformed into a Jerusalem cross...make sure you ask her about it, it's really cool!!!

We then had a very nice lunch where some of us had Tilapia, or "St. Peter's Fish". It's a fish that is only found the Sea of Galilee, and so it was named St. Peter's fish. Doesn't it look good!:)

Our server was very talented as you can see, he collected ALL of our dishes at once! Our meal was then topped of with Turkish coffee...the only way I can describe it is to take a pot of coffee and let it sit on the burner for about 3 days and have all the water evaporate out of it...the sludge you have left would be Turkish coffee! I loved it! In fact...I had two cups!:)

Then our journey took us further north...
